It was a familiar feeling for Terry Longbons and his staff after losing another game to mentor Fatty Matty Ryebread in DC on Thursday. The loss brings the streak to 7 in a row dropped to the Cardinals. Yet, this one stings a little more.
The game was ripe for the taking, as the Cardinals were not their normally crisp self on offense. An over-aggressive coaching decision by Arizona gifted the WFT 7 points, and a few possessions later, the Cards doubled down on aggressiveness, and cost themselves 3 more points. Kyler Murray was sporadic, never made a backbreaking play with his feet, threw a ball to the home team, and put another ball on the turf.
However, the Football Team could not stop stepping on their own dicks. Three interceptions – all to aging MLB Dennis Tiller – halted drives and flipped fields. Crippling penalties extended drives for the Cards and took points off the board for DC. Drops in traffic prevented first downs. And the aforementioned Murray fumble was booted by a Washington defender, falling harmlessly into an alert Hines Roethlisberger’s mitts.
All in all, the day felt like a giant missed opportunity by Washington – a highly winnable game they let slip through their fingers.
The schedule doesn’t get much easier for the WFT. After a tune up in Cincinnati, they travel to Tampa Bay to play the Bucs before returning home to host the Detroit Lions. After today’s loss, those two games could have major playoff implications.
Longbons should also be intently watching divisional rival Abe Hands’ matchup with the Vikings this evening. A win by Hands in that one, and the WFT-Eagles Week 17 match-up could ultimately be a play-in game for the play-offs.
Regardless, the season is far from over for the Football Team after today’s all-to-familiar result. But there is no way the WFT locker room doesn’t feel like they missed a giant opportunity today to exercise some Cardinals demons while also shoring up their spot in the playoffs.
Final Score: Cardinals 24 – Football Team 17
